Library services during the Coronavirus (Covid 19) outbreak
Although the Library building is closed, library services continue. There are many resources that can be access online via Locate and the team of Academic Liaison Librarians are here to support you. There is livechat available on Locate, which will pop up when you use it. Further information about changes to our service during this time can be found on the FAQs.
Your main point of contact within the library is your Academic Liaison Librarian . They are responsible for supporting staff with both teaching and research. If you have teaching duties they will work with you to embed and deliver information skills into the curriculum, as well as support you with the creation of reading lists for your modules. They also co-ordinate information resource provision for the subject areas that they support. Academic Liaison Librarians can also offer support for both scholarly and applied research.
The Academic Liaison Team are based in the DMLL (Disruptive Media Learning Lab) on the third floor of the Library. If you have any questions please ask.
If you are a new member of staff you will receive information about the Library as part of your university induction. Your Academic Liaison Librarian can give you a more detailed tour of the library and also show you the resources that we have for your subject both online via the library catalogue, Locate and in print. Advice and assistance is always available on request.
If you are non-payroll staff and would need access to e-resources you will need to complete the application form.
Information literacy is embedded into most courses and the Academic Liaison Librarians work in collaboration with teaching staff to develop students’ information literacy whether they are undergraduate, postgraduate or Phd students. This includes induction and library basics through to specialist searching, searching for their dissertations, referencing and referencing management software like Refworks. These can be delivered face to face, online, in a teaching room in the Library or lecture theatre/seminar room. Please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian for further details.
The Library manages an online reading list system for the university. If you are responsible for a module, please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian for instructions and help in constructing and editing your reading lists. Please also see the online tutorials and guides to using the reading list software. Make sure that you involve your Academic Liaison Librarian in planning curriculum development so that we know what materials you and your new students will need and we can purchase them.
Scanning of high demand book chapters and journal articles can be undertaken as part of the University Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) agreement but it must be requested through the Library, so that we can ensure that the correct copyright notices and fees are paid. Scanned chapters will be made available via the module reading list. Further information about digitization and copyright can be found on the Copyright Libguide. Contact your Academic Liaison Librarian or Document Supply Service (Phone 65 7520 or email firstname.lastname@example.org) if you need an item scanned.
TV and radio programmes are accessible under the terms of the ERA licence via the BoB database (Box of Broadcasts). If you have any questions about A-V resources, phone 65 7520 or email email@example.com . Information on using BoB can be found on the BoB LibGuide.
Flying Start is the scheme that equips students with the resources they need for their course. Information about the scheme from a staff perspective can be found on the Flying Start staff portal pages.
There are a range of facilities and support available in the Library for staff and students with a disability. Full details can be found on the Disability Support Libguide.
Locate is our online catalogue. Here you can search for both online and physical items.
You will need your University ID card to enter the library and to borrow material. Your University username and password will be needed to access your personal account on Locate, enabling you to renew items on loan and reserve items (where all copies are on loan).
You can borrow up to a maximum of 20 items at a time (books, CDs or DVDs) and you can reserve up to 10 items at a time. The loan periods are either 8 week standard loan with unlimited renewals up to 24 weeks (unless the item has been reserved by another user), 1 week loan which you can keep renewing for up to 15 weeks (unless the item has been reserved by another user) and 1 day loan that can not be renewed. You will receive a monthly summary of all your borrowing.
All staff are linked to the Follow Me system enabling you to print, photocopy and scan on any printer around campus. Please make sure that your copying observes the CLA license and that it is for class activity or private research only. Further details about copyright can be found on the Copyright Libguide.
Material that is not available from the Lanchester Library can usually be obtained from the British Library through the Document Supply Service. This service is free. Details can be found on the Document Supply Service LibGuide. For more information contact Document Supply on 65 7520 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Alternatively contact your Academic Liaison Librarian.
The SCONUL Access scheme provides borrowing from other university libraries for academic staff and research students. A list of participating institutions is on the SCONUL website, where you can register for the scheme.
The Library can be a large and daunting place for students whatever their previous educational background. We can support your students to make the most of the Library and its vast amount of physical and online resources in a variety of ways:
Led by an Academic Liaison Librarian, these sessions will be more in-depth and tailored to a particular group. The content will be decided by the Librarian in conjunction with you. Typically, a session will include information on some or all of the following, but will encourage students to apply critical thinking to the what, where, and why of using information resources:
We have three teaching rooms equipped with PCs or laptops that allow students to have a hands-on learning experience. We are also happy to come over to run sessions in your department.
We can also provide a workshop based around a particular resource, such as referencing software e.g. Refworks. To discuss the provision of an information skills workshop, induction, or drop-in, please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian.
Some Librarians offer regular drop-in sessions in the department. Contact your Academic Liaison Librarian if you would like to arrange this.
Librarians are happy to offer one-to-one support to students on an appointment or drop-in basis (depending on availability). Appointments can be booked online with their Academic Liaison Librarian.
Librarians are always happy to support orientation for visiting academics from partner institutions and accreditation visits.
There are many online guides available covering a wide range of Library and information searching topics..They can be found on the Libguides page. In addition each Academic Liaison Librarian has their own subject-based Libguides.
Coventry Student Essentials is a collection of online tutorials that can be incorporated into teaching sessions or accessed directly by students.
We provide workshops on a range of library and study skills topics including induction and library basics, referencing, critically evaluating information, planning study time and working from home. These are available for students to book and will be delivered online or in one of the teaching rooms in the Library. For general enquiries including, account queries, access issues and any difficulties with accessing digital resources please direct them to our LibAnswers service.
For students needing support with finding and using information, refer your student to their Academic Liaison Librarian.
If they are unable to login to University resources eg CUOnline, Solar, PCs, email, etc. contact IT Services.
If they need writing support refer them to the Centre for Academic Writing.

We are involved in centrally organised open days and provide tours of the Library, usually led by member of the Academic Liaison Team (ALT).
If you have a group that requires a tour of the Library outside of the official open days, please do get in touch with your Academic Liaison Librarian. We would be more than happy to arrange a tour where appropriate. We would prefer that you do not bring large group into the Library without giving us prior notice as this can cause disruption for existing students.
Academic Liaison Librarians are happy to offer support for accreditation visits and Partner Colleges.
To provide our new students with an understanding of what to expect from the Library before they arrive we have created a Libguide for Pre-Arrival Library Support. This is particularly useful for our international students, who may have had very different experiences of using libraries. It is also a good introduction to the Library for students who arrive late.
We offer regular reference access to local sixth form students as well as participating in the SCONUL access scheme for staff and students of other HE institutions.
