Dear researchers,
Roses are red,
Data Management is sure,
For thinking long-term about storage,
To do this, please use Pure.
As #LoveDataWeek comes to a conclusion for 2022, considerations for data do not come to an end at the close of a research project. With Research Funders and university policies requiring the long-term preservation and sharing (where it is appropriate to do so) of data for the validation of research outputs, it is essential that data are stored in a repository or data centre.
A repository is an online database service, an archive that manages the long-term storage of digital resources and provides a catalogue for discovery and access. The best repository to choose for your research data will be a national data centre or discipline-specialist repository, because they have the expertise and resources to deal with particular types of data. Some funders provide data centres to preserve research data from the projects they fund, for example ESRC and the UK Data Service. The Registry of Research Data Repositories (re3data.org) hosts a catalogue of discipline-specific repositories; other platforms such as figshare, Zenodo, Dryad and Mendeley Data are multidisciplinary in content. Most data repositories are free to deposit and access, some require registration and some make a charge for their service.
An alternative choice would be to utilise an institutional repository; at Coventry University, we have Pure. In a similar process to the upload of research articles and conference proceedings, data(sets) and metadata records can be stored long-term in the repository. On validation by the Research and Scholarly Publications Team, these outputs will display on a researcher’s Pure Portal profile.
This short video demonstrates the upload process.
