CU Scarborough - Library Guide: Using Ebooks

Library ebooks are generally accessed through Locate – when you search for books, the majority of results are usually ebooks.

Where we can, we always purchase ebook copies of every title on your reading list. We also get copies of other texts your tutors ask for in e-format where budget allows.

If a title as available as an ebook, you should see ‘access online’ as one of the options on the catalogue record; just click this and follow the link you are given.

We have ebooks from several providers, which all work in slightly different ways, but generally you can:

• Highlight passages of text
• Add comments (like putting a sticky note next to relevant bits)
• Print out a certain amount (generally one chapter or 10% of the total book, which is a copyright limitation)
• Download or ‘borrow’ the book to use offline for a few days

From this year, you can also get core reading materials for your course via BibliU. These texts appear in Locate searches, but you may prefer to use BibliU directly as it has a friendly interface and should have a bookshelf of titles for your course which appears on the front page. You can:

• Search both for book titles and within the text of the book (as well as searching for figures and diagrams).
• ‘Favourite’ books to make them appear on your home screen (like the watchlist on Netflix)
• Change the appearance of book pages, including the size of text and colour of the text and background
• Highlight and make notes in the text, as well as a text-to-speech option for highlighted blocks of text and a ‘speed-reader’ feature
• Download copies of books on your phone or tablet to use offline (your core reading will stay downloaded forever, other titles vary)

You can use BibliU via an app on your mobile device (iOS/Android) as well as through a standard internet browser.
