Here at Coventry University London we want to make sure all our students have the skills they need to succeed on their degree course. To help us do this, we require all new students to complete our Academic Language and Skills Diagnostic Exercise when they begin studying with us.
The ALS diagnostic exercise will be available from Monday 16th May 2022 for all newly enrolled students. Click below to complete the ALS diagnostic exercise:
What is a diagnostic exercise?
A diagnostic exercise is a method of evaluating a person's skills or knowledge in a particular area. Based on this evaluation, we are able to identify areas of strength and weakness. This information helps you develop your self-awareness and helps us direct you towards resources and services (like workshops, tutorials or online lessons) that are most appropriate for you.
Who should do the diagnostic exercise?
All students who have recently enrolled at Coventry University London should do the diagnostic exercise. This includes students studying on undergraduate courses (BA, BSc) postgraduate courses (MSc, MA, MBA), students on top-up courses and students joining a course in year 2 or 3. All new students, whether you are a home student, international student, or native English speaker should complete the exercise.
What does the ALS diagnostic exercise assess?
The ALS diagnostic exercise assesses your skills in three main areas:
1. English Language Proficiency
2. Academic English
3. Academic Skills
Will I be able to see my score?
Yes, after submitting the exercise, you will receive an email with your results to your university email address. You should receive this within 3 working days. For each section of the exercise, you will see your total score as a percentage (%), and your level. Your level helps us and you to understand your score. There are four levels:
If your level is 'requires improvement' in any area, we strongly recommend you complete the suggested online lessons for that topic. Here is an example of the results summary you will receive by email:

You can do the exercise online. You will need a stable internet connection, your university username and password. Although you can do the exercise on a mobile phone, you may find it easier to do on a computer.
How long does the ALS diagnostic exercise take?
While there is no fixed time limit to complete the diagnostic exercise, you should allow between 45 and 90 minutes to complete it to the best of your ability. You will only be able to submit your response once.
