What is an Academic Writing Tutorial?

These 45-minute tutorials offer more in-depth help with writing your assignment. Our tutors can advise you on a range of topics, from planning and research to developing strong arguments and polishing your language. 

You can book a tutorial at any stage of the writing process, from planning to polishing. You can only book one tutorial at a time and one tutorial per week. Any multiple appointments found on the system will be automatically cancelled.

Possible areas of focus could include:

• Improving your academic style
• Organising your ideas
• Developing your vocabulary
• Structuring your writing
• Using evidence to support your ideas
• Understanding your assignment brief
• Planning your assignment

All tutorials are currently being delivered online via Microsoft Teams. Tutorials are delivered by the Centre for Academic Writing  (CAW - Coventry) and the Academic Skills Unit (ASU - London). Click below to book:

Once you have booked, you will receive a booking confirmation email. Please email a copy of your assignment brief and any writing you have done at least 24 hours before your appointment to academic.skills@culc.coventry.ac.uk. Your tutor will call you on MS Teams at the time of your appointment.

What is an Academic Skills Tutorial?

Academic Skills tutorials are 1-hour, 1-1 workshops designed to support your study skills development. These workshops are delivered by friendly Librarians who can advise you on a range of topics, from research to referencing.

• Finding Information (Research; Using Databases)
• Getting Started with Your Dissertation

Academic Skills

Once you have booked, you will receive a booking confirmation email. We will then call you on MS Teams at the time of your appointment.

What is a Proof-Reading Tutorial?

These short 15-minute tutorials are a chance to get quick feedback on common errors you may have made in your writing. This could include grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure or punctuation. Each tutorial is 15 minutes long, and is limited to a maximum of ONE page of writing only. We cannot proof-read your whole assignment. 

Please note, you can only book one tutorial at a time and one tutorial per week. Any multiple appointments found on the system will be automatically cancelled.

The tutor can:

• Highlight poor grammar.
• Point out spelling errors, repetition, missing words or inappropriate word use.
• Identify errors or inconsistencies in formatting or labelling.
• Check if referencing is appropriate.

 The tutor cannot:

• Rewrite sentences, or sections of text.
• Comment on the structure of the paper’s argument.
• Add new material to the document.
• Write your citations and/or references

Need more help?

The Centre for Academic Writing (CAW) keeps a list of Coventry University approved proof-readers. These are people who have submitted their CV and completed an application in order be on the list. You can contact these people if you would like your assignment proof-read, at a cost. Please note that a proof-reader will generally need at least 10 working days to complete your request for proof-reading, and are under no obligation to take on your assignment for proof-reading.
