Postal Request Service

What is the Postal Request Service?
The Postal Request Service (PRS) will post out books or copies of journal articles from the Library’s stock to staff and students that are unable to visit the Library. The service is primarily for distance students and students on placement.

How does it work?
To make a request you need to  download a Postal Request Form  which includes some relevant information and guidance notes.
Once you have filled in the request form, ensure you have signed the copyright declaration and email it to the address above.

Students may request standard loan books that we have in print, by email (preferred) or by telephone.
The requested books will be issued to your Library record and posted to you.

Request forms for copies of articles or chapters will need to be signed after the copyright declaration and then emailed to the address above.
We will send the copies for you to keep.
Who is it for?
The service is primarily aimed at students who are unable to get to the Library due to their location or the nature of their course, however the service is open to any registered student or staff member who is willing to pay the charge of £2 per item and has confirmed that the item(s) required are available in the Lanchester Library print stock.

What can I request?
You may request any standard loan book that you have checked is available on Locate. Any other category of book is not available through the PRS service.
You can request only one chapter or 10% from a book. Copyright Law prevents us copying more than 1 chapter or 10% of any book on your behalf.
You may also request only one article or 10%  from any print journal issue that the Library subscribes to, providing copyright law is adhered to.
How many items may I request?
When requesting books the limit is your Library issuing limit. (20 books)
Please ensure that you have space on your Library card for the books that you request.
When requesting copies of articles there is no upper page limit, but if the article is longer than 30 pages an additional charge of 5p per extra page will be charged.

How long will it take to receive my requests?
The service will aim to send out any available item to you within two working days of receiving your request.

How much does it cost?
£2 per item.

Requests for articles and chapters from students overseas will also be charged for the cost of posting by airmail.

If you are requesting standard loan books by email or telephone a charge of £2 will be added on to your Library loan record. This can be paid when you make your next visit to the Library.

Are there any categories of student who can receive this service free of charge?
No! Although some students have credits to use within the Library, we cannot offer a free Postal Request Service.

I live overseas. Can I still use the Postal Request Service?
We can post out photocopies of articles to non UK addresses but not books. We can however photocopy one chapter from a book or one article from a printed journal issue and post that to you.
Each request will still cost £2 per request but there may be an additional postal cost. Please contact the Document Delivery Office to find out more.

What else do I need to know?
We do not send out any one week or one day loan books.
Books that are reserved by other students will not be sent out by the PRS as the reservation will reduce the loan period to one week.
Only photocopies of articles and chapters are sent internationally.

How do I return a book?
We would prefer that you return the books by recorded delivery post. This will enable you to trace and recover the cost of the books if they go missing. Please ensure that the books are returned to the Library by the date specified on the date label inside the book.
