RSP - OA

This is the version that is first submitted to the journal. Typically publishers are happy for you to share this version (for instance in a pre-print repository), as it only serves to raise interest in the final published version as the article goes through development. While this can be shared openly, it does not meet most Open Access requirements as they need a version at least after peer review changes to be made open.

This is the version you sent to the journal which they then accepted for publication. This version has all of the changes from peer review but is before the publisher prepares it for publication with typesetting etc.

This is the version that you are expected to upload to Pure when you create a record, that must be deposited within three months of acceptance. It is often still in a word doc format. We are aware that some journals require you to submit your article through a LaTex template which may make it appear more like the proof version - in this case we will check the journal's policy and may ask you to confirm the version.

This is the version after acceptance where the publisher has started to prepare the article for publication by typesetting and beginning to add elements such as logos, copyright statements, DOIs, etc. Typically we cannot share this version as publishers intend this version to be used solely to correct the final aspects before final publication.

The final published version, as it appears on the publisher's website can only be shared in a repository in certain circumstances, regardless of whether or not you can access it. Few publishers allow this version to be shared unless the article has been published Open Access with a Creative Commons Licence. For this reason, we typically ask for the accepted manuscript (which should be deposited before publication anyway, in the three months after acceptance) as we can replace it with the final published version if the journal will allow us.
