The Centre for Academic Writing offers Coventry University Group PhD and Masters by Research (MRes) students and Academics four modules (short courses) aimed at developing writing for Research and Publication purposes.
MRes students may take these modules to help them during their masters study. These are not credit bearing modules but they do compliment any Masters by Research discipline.
PGR students can take these modules and accrue up to 100 development hours per module. Check each module information document for a detailed breakdown of development hours allocation.
Coventry University Group Academic staff can also enrol on these modules (as scheduled) free of charge.
A feature of all of these modules is formative feedback on writing from a CAW Academic Writing specialist. Places on CAW’s modules are limited and subject to availability. For further information please email pgstudies.caw@coventry.ac.uk
Thesis Writing: Processes and Organisation (7012CAW) encourages students to analyse their expectations, decisions, and priorities of their writing and writing processes. Students will explore organising and maximising texts - including how external documents (proposal, ethics form, conference papers, Progress Review documentation) can inform thesis writing; writing and editing processes; and clarifying argument. The module will include a writing retreat. The module is suitable for students of all disciplines at any stage of thesis writing and is particularly suited to students who are currently questioning the structures and priorities of their writing.

Crafting a Research Article (7023CAW) examines the features, argumentation and expectations of the research article as an academic writing genre. Participants select and review a range of research articles in their discipline with a view to developing their own approach to research writing. The module is designed for those who are approaching writing for publication for the first time and have begun (or are about to begin) a research project that could lead to a scholarly or scientific publication. The module includes a three-day writing retreat.
Module Leaders: Dr Dimitar Angelov, Assistant Professor Research
Dr Mustafa Coban, Lecturer in Academic Writing
Semester 2: 21 January 2025 – 26 February 2025
Semester 3: Between 26 May 2025 – 1 August 2025 (actual dates to be confirmed)

Writing for Scholarly Publication (7024CAW) helps participants gain experience in writing for publication by overseeing participants’ production of a research output from writing following data analysis through to submission. The module features a writing retreat and peer-reviewing opportunities. Researchers who have completed data gathering and analysis or other scholarly research will benefit from this module. The module can help move research that has been generated for a thesis or dissertation, reported to funding bodies, or presented at conferences, into the pages of scholarly journals, books, or other publications.

Semester 3: Between 26th May 2025 – 1st August 2025 (actual dates to be confirmed)
