Using QR codes in academic written assignments can be a good way to enhance your presentations, portfolios, posters, and marketing materials, for instance by capturing survey information, linking to websites, or providing access to downloadable documents, etc. The following website: https://www.qr-code-generator.com/ allows free unlimited QR codes and scans.
Important Note: These QR codes are static so any change to a website URL or file location will require a new QR code to be generated and all documents updated with the new QR code.
Do not create an account as it will automatically sign you up to a 7-day trial. After which, all QR codes you created will expire. For free QR codes, just use the homepage of the website.
Go to the webpage you wish to create a QR code for, copy the URL, and paste it into the centre of the page.
This is now your QR code. Under the free option, you can now make some changes before you download the file.
The red-ringed frames are available as a free option.
You can then choose various shapes of the code and colours for free. Click on the round + button to open the colour palette. Depending on the size the QR code is going to be, consider using the standard shape with no frame.
The red-ringed logos are available free. Only consider using the “Scan Me” option if the QR code is going to be big enough to see! You are now ready to click on the Download JPG button – although it downloads as a PNG file.
When you click on the download button, you will see this screen pop up. Ignore the window with the information on customising your QR code but do take note of the ringed information. It can take a while for the QR code to be generated so please be patient. Do not close the window until you know the QR code has downloaded.
You can see if it has downloaded by clicking on the Download icon in your browser.
When the QR code has been generated, it will appear in your Download folder on your PC.
It is recommended you rename the file immediately to represent what the QR Code is for. In this example, filename “CAW Libguides Homepage - 21-10-24” would clearly indicate where the QR code would take you and the date when the code was generated.
You may wish to open the QR code file and crop it to remove as much of the white background as possible.
