The Centre for Academic Writing offers a variety of writing support to students that helps you explore:
To make the most of utilising CAW’s writing support, take a little time to read how each of our services can help you build not just an academic writing skill set but a transferable one as you move into your chosen career.
Although CAW’s most popular writing support is an individualised academic writing tutorial, all our services complement each other. Reading one of our resources, or attending an academic writing workshop in a topic you would like to explore, will allow you to concentrate on specific areas of your writing in a tutorial without needing to examine the principals of that topic and how it relates to your assignment brief.
Additionally, as you progress through your assignment, you may just have a quick query on your writing and not need a full appointment. Our no appointment necessary ‘Single Question Drop-in’ sessions may be useful.
CAW’s Libguides pages contain a plethora of academic writing resources that can support you with different genres of writing styles, topics to help with the writing process, and resources that cover academic language, glossaries, and grammar.

CAW delivers online academic writing development workshops for students at all levels of their study. We have a range of academic writing topics; from helping you with starting your writing journey, understanding different writing genres and styles including dissertation writing, through to how to understand and implement written assignment feedback.
Workshop topics include:
Workshops are scheduled on a variety of days and times, including evenings and Saturday mornings, to suit students with busy diaries. Complementing our written resources, attending one of workshops before booking an individual academic writing tutorial ensures our Tutor will be able to concentrate on guiding and advising you on specific areas of your written assignment.

CAW’s most popular writing support are our individual 45-minute academic writing tutorial appointments. Although not necessary, making a start on your writing before your tutorial will generally mean that you get more from the appointment. We guide and support you at any stage of your writing, from early plans and first drafts, through to concentrating on specific topics such as critical analysis, argument flow, and paragraph structure. Utilising our writing resources and attending workshops are excellent ways to introduce you to academic writing before booking a writing tutorial.
Once you decide you would like to have an individualised writing tutorial, it is important you read and follow our booking policy: https://libguides.coventry.ac.uk/CAWhomepage/tutorialbookingpolicy
Time goes quickly in a tutorial!
It is not possible for tutors to discuss “everything” in a 45-minute appointment. Think about which area of the assignment you need the most guidance on and highlight this when booking the appointment. CAW does not proof-read students’ written assignments so please do not put this on the booking form. However, we do provide a written resource, and deliver, a workshop on proof-reading strategies.
Planning ahead will ensure you make the most of your time with the Tutor. Read through our ‘Making the most out of your academic writing tutorial’ leaflet to help with this: https://libguides.coventry.ac.uk/CAWhomepage/makingmostoftutorial
During peak teaching weeks in semester one and semester two, CAW schedules a no appointment necessary ‘Single Question Drop-in’ session several times a week. Each drop-in session lasts for 1 hour 45 minutes with an Academic Writing Tutor offering a maximum of 10-minutes support and guidance per person. It is an opportunity at peak times for you to be able to receive quick advice and guidance.
These sessions do not provide instruction in the principles of writing. Our tutors can answer single questions on topics such as: citations, word choices, phrasing etc. Having your question and assignment to hand will able you to get the most of the drop-in support.
